Along the nature trail at Lake Quinault (just outside of the Olympic National Park), there is a short spur trail running up to this great specimen. They call downed logs with trees growing out of them “nurse logs”, so this must be a nurse stump. Wonderful root system.

Golly, never saw this before! You’re educating me on nature through your beautiful photography.
Allan, this is a rich image: root hands clutching what nourishes and supports.
