This is a stump from the Ancient Bristlecone Forest. In the early 1900’s there was a mining operation in the White Mountains north of Death Valley. The miners cut down the local trees for timbers for their buildings and mine supports, not caring that they were cutting down trees that were thousands of years old. Fortunately, the mining operation failed in a short time. Besides the stumps, several of the buildings remain:
