I thought the streaking clouds were wonderful and then a solar bar showed up and made it even better. Taken in Olympia, Washington … and this is a sunset.
Al, what is a solar bar??. I just thought streaky sunsets like this one were caused by clouds, thinner air or something and the wind. I never thought about why things change colors or look a certain way. This one is quite pretty by the way.

The sunset is caused by the clouds, but the bright vertical bar or pillar above where the sun is setting is caused by ice crystals in the upper atmosphere.
