While up in the high country of the Olympic National Park, we saw these juvenile grey jay while we were stopped for lunch. It wasn’t as pushy as the adults can get once they get used into their ‘camp robbing’ behavior… actually pretty shy. But still interested enough to keep an eye on us. There seemed to be a piece of lichen stuck to its feathers (both on its head and wing feathers) … you can see some of it growing on the branch it’s sitting on.
Grey jays do have quite a bad reputation as beggars and thieves, but I still like them. They have been fed by humans which is never good for wildlife.
A reputation well deserved!
