Pond at Chinese Gardens

Pond at Chinese Gardens

This is the pond at Chinese Gardens in Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend, WA. There aren’t any gardens, anymore. The sunlight breaking through and hitting the surface of the pond was pretty stunning. Especially after a couple days with heavy cloud cover.

And one of those times where I had been in the woods and using a high ISO, the sun broke out and I went for the shot without resetting the ISO down … plenty of exposure room to have got down to the base ISO.

Misty Mountains

Misty Mountains

I really like the atmospheric effects in this image (the shades of grey fading into the distant mountains). It is one of the things I look for when shooting. That and the moments of light breaking through.

Mountains in the Clouds

Mountains in the Clouds

This the the northeast corner of the Olympic Mountains from the Jefferson County Airport. I was out driving around and noticed a small break in the clouds … fortunately, I was close to the airport and could pull in and get a clear shot before the clouds filled in again.

Mill, Mountains and Marina

The Port Townsend Paper mill is the largest local employer. Unless, perhaps, you call the ocean the employer of the fishing fleet. Another strong candidate would be the Olympic National Park and the recreational opportunities it provides. This image almost looks like it is a toned black and white image … but it is pretty much a straight (non-enhanced) color image.

Marina Sunset

Marina Sunset

When we had a clearing late in the day, I headed down to the beach in downtown Port Townsend to catch the sunset. I thought the strong backlighting of the fishing fleet was an interesting contrast to the homes on the hillside and a faint hint of the mountains in the distance.

Dock and Crane, Indian Island

Dock and Crane, Indian Island

This is looking across the bay at Port Townsend to the pier where they load/unload naval ships. There was quite a bit of rain shower activity and low clouds. It created an interesting visual. I changed this to black and white, but couldn’t tell much of a difference.

The Kennewick in Stormy Weather

The Ferry Kennewick coming in to Port Townsend

I enjoy walking in stormy weather and this October day was perfect for that. The rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains protects Port Townsend (some) but it is often very windy. Walking along the beach downtown, I noticed the ferry Kennewick coming into town. I was a little surprised, since in high winds they often cancel that ferry run.
