Old Windows

Old Church Window

Driving around on backcountry roads you can find a lot abandoned churches and schools. Before transportation was motorized, schools and churches were local even in rural areas so that folks could access their services. The image above was taken somewhere out in the backcountry in north central Oregon, somewhere near Wasco … where the image of the storefront window below was shot. The church window gave me fits trying to get an image that didn’t look crooked. Oh well. I think it’s past it’s time of being worried about squared up.

Looking Out Windows

Looking out windows – 1

There was a huge variety of condition of the rooms in the Hastings Building (for additional info on the Hastings Building, see my previous post). This one was in better condition than most … and the only one I noticed having a fireplace. Not sure that there is any chimney anymore. It was interesting that the glass varied significantly … some was old enough that it showed the typical waviness of old window glass. And much was newer … with less waviness. The windows on the weather side of the building are more susceptible to being blown out during storms and I expect the older glass is more susceptible than the newer panes.

Reflections

Reflection 1

I worked some to get these photos of the reflections without having them show my reflection. They were both taken in downtown Port Townsend, WA.

I stood off to the side (just barely) and then did some correction to the perspective in LIghtroom. These were taken with my Nikon F100 on Kodak Tri-X. I have them developed and the lab does high resolution scans, which I then import to Lightroom (after amending the EXIF data to reflect the camera make, etc.).

(EXIF data is included in all digital images … and includes such things as the capture time and the camera settings … and can include all sorts of other stuff such as copyright info and contact information.)

Abandoned Window

Abandoned Window

This window is from one of the battlements at Fort Worden State Park and one that is readily accessible to visitors. As such, it has been ‘tagged’ numerous times over the years. The park approach is to paint over the tags. Between the pealing paint, normal discolor with aging and the tag removal touch up paint, the color patterns can be very visually interesting.

Window with Peeling Paint

Window and Peeling Paint

Actually, I’m not sure if a window is a window if it is boarded up. One of those deep (or not) philosophical questions that I don’t bother with much.

The peeling paint reminded me of when I had to scrape the family home one summer, getting it ready for painting.
