Three Prune Camp supposedly got it’s name from an early Mountaineers party that camped there with their provisions reduced to 3 prunes. The camp is along a ridge between the North Fork Quinault and the Queets valleys in Olympic National Park. It was seldom visited, but is an excellent camp along the Skyline Trail, which provides dramatic views of the central Olympics from the south. There are more hikers up there these days, but it is still a remote area, a long ways from a trailhead.
I was at Fort Worden State Park recently. There had been some snow the day before, but it was mostly gone (you can still see some left in the driftwood in the top image). I liked the water in the bottom photo and the splashes frozen in time.
These are old images from before the Elwha River dams were removed. The Elwha River is in the Olympic National Park and the two dams were blocking passage of salmon into some of the most pristine forest in the lower 48.
The top photo shows Jeff looking for remnants of the Press Party blazes left over from the 1890’s. We were unable to locate any on this trip, but later I found some of the distinctive markings cut into the side of old doug firs.
The lower image shows one of the side channels and using a stick to keep your feet dry. Currently, this whole area has been changed, since this was between the two dams and now subject to the whims of the river and its reworking of the stream bed and channels.
This was a February day, canoeing on Lake Quinault in the middle of the rain forest just outside Olympic National Park. Having a windless, sunny day in the middle of winter in the Olympics is the definition of a Happy Day.
I thought this image captured some of the wonder and joy of a first walk at the beach. Some of my earliest memories are being at the beach with my family. We lived close to the beach until I was 6 … and went razor clam digging on a regular basis.
