Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound

Olympic Mountains and Puget Sound

Photo taken at sunrise from Alki Beach, “Birthplace of Seattle”. Note the two ferries heading to Seattle… the one of the left is coming from Bremerton, the one on the right from Bainbridge Island.

Mill, Mountains and Marina

The Port Townsend Paper mill is the largest local employer. Unless, perhaps, you call the ocean the employer of the fishing fleet. Another strong candidate would be the Olympic National Park and the recreational opportunities it provides. This image almost looks like it is a toned black and white image … but it is pretty much a straight (non-enhanced) color image.

Marina Sunset

Marina Sunset

When we had a clearing late in the day, I headed down to the beach in downtown Port Townsend to catch the sunset. I thought the strong backlighting of the fishing fleet was an interesting contrast to the homes on the hillside and a faint hint of the mountains in the distance.

Moonset over the Olympics

The new moon setting over the NE Olympic Mountains

This was October 29th, the moon at about 13.3%. I went out to the county airport to get a clear view to the SW and lucked out with the moon setting over the small patch of the Olympic Mountains visible from that location.

Upper Dungeness View

Upper Dungeness Valley

The Upper Dungeness valley in the Olympic National Forest is located in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. Some areas only receive 1/10th of the annual rainfall that the rainforest valleys of the west side of the Olympics receive. There are also fewer visitors than many areas of the Olympic National Park. (and no daily backcountry use fees, either)
