Elwha Valley View

Elwha Valley View

This is from a little used overlook of the Elwha River valley in Olympic National Park. The area is between sites of the two dams that were removed several years ago… and the river is enjoying its newly re-found freedom by washing out the road. I liked the madrone on the right… they are just along the trail.

This is a panorama of 7 photos (a lot of overlap) … close to a 180 degree view. So there is lots of horizontal compression. I also used a manual exposure setting to ensure consistent values across the shots… and used Abode Lightroom to stitch the panorama.

Halequin Ducks

Harlequin Ducks by Allan J Jones
Harlequin Ducks

I was eating lunch on the bridge across the Elwha River, up above the road washout. While munching, I walked to the other side of the bridge and noticed that just below the bridge were two pair of harlequin ducks. I was glad I had brought my big zoom lens.

I balanced the lens on the middle rail of the bridge and took several shots. That let me get the shutter speed down. It was a cloudy day, so I still had to have the lens wide open.

I was afraid that I might startle them and have them fly off. That didn’t happen. Instead they all took naps!

Big Leaf Maple and Elwha Ranger Station

DSC_1189

The sun shining on the mossy trunk of the maple really caught my attention… having the ranger station in the background was a plus. The hill behind has the bluish cast due to the mists forming in the valley (my hypothesis). Across from the ranger station is the old gas station used for fueling park vehicles.

Trees and Mist

Trees and Mist

This is along the Elwha River in Olympic National Park. The sun was going down and backlit the trees with the mists behind them. The line of trees along the ridge line is a nice touch that I didn’t notice at the time.

Elwha River in Winter

Taken from the Madison Falls parking lot in the Olympic National Park. I’m not too excited about how the details show up on the web view. One of those times that the image really needs printing.
