I sorta wish I knew who these two were, but I was shooting with a long lens and had no way to contact them. I’m sure they would have used this for their Christmas card, or something.
Beach Walk and Sea Birds
Beach Walk
A beach walk on a winter day on the beach at Kalaloch can be wet and windy, or you can get lucky and have a sunny day and mild weather. But there’s always stuff to see.
Dock, Ferry, Sailboat, Kingfisher and Mt Rainier
This is downtown Port Townsend and the old ferry dock. In the background is the ferry heading over to the ‘new’ terminal about 1/4 mile … at the other end of downtown PT. I noticed the kingfisher sitting on the cables running between the pilings, and wished I had my telephoto lens (too heavy to carry around just in case). And Mt Rainier behind the mast of the sailboat is also a minor picture element. I like the combination of these … but it really breaks one of the rules of photography: the subject should be easy to recognize. Here, there are too many separate picture elements. But, I like it anyway.
Seagull in Sunburst
I was still trying out the Nikon F6 (with Portra 400 film) … when I buy a used film camera, I try to get a roll or two of images shot fairly quickly, so I can determine if the camera is working well. This image shows the high contrast that results in the shadow areas going completely black. Digital images give you a lot more ability to recover some of the details in those areas …
What I like about this image is there was a seagull flying over that got ‘caught’ in the sunburst caused by the lens diaphragm. I didn’t even notice the gull at the time.
Cinnamon Teal
One of my favorite birds is the cinnamon teal. I really like the rusty coloration. You can’t see it very well in these images, but their eyes are bright red. (the image bellow shows it some)
