Mountains Stay the Same

Mt Steel from Hart Lake, Olympic National Park
Mountains stay the same
but our perception of them
as the clouds come and go
changes continually.
The mountain continuously changes
but too slow for our perception.

Rivers change
gravel bars and boulders move
log jams form and wash away.
A river changes
from trickle to torrent
cutting its channel on its way to the sea.

Trees don't stay the same
they drop leaves or needles, limbs even
year to year, they grow
fast at first, slower with age
sorta like people

We are not stuck in time
time washes over us
through us.
We change with the tides
with the moon
with the seasons
’til we return to the sea.
