Sun Dapples

Sun Dapples

Not sure what else you should call these splotches of sun through the forest cover, but dapples sounds good to me. Sort of reverse shadows. I liked them anyway.

Taken with my Nikon FM3a on Kodak Tri-X.

The top photo shows the Point Wilson Lighthouse and Admiralty Inlet into Puget Sound. The clouds are hiding Mt Baker in the Cascades. The lower photo shows the ramp that was used for moving a searchlight out to the edge of the bluff to watch for enemy ships (pre-WWI). Both were taken from Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend.

While these are taken with my Nikon FM3a on Tri-X film (and processed in a professional lab), I get scans back from the lab that I work on in Lightroom on my computer. I liked the treatment here of having large areas of solid black … and the interesting silhouettes.

Me and My Shadow

Me and My Shadow (1)

I usually try to avoid having my shadow in the photo. But I decided to intentionally include it in these shots (really!) … just because you should always break the photo rules once in a while. I kinda like how these turned out.

Dosewallips Road (washed out)

Dosewallips Road (Washed Out)

This image was sitting around unloved. The problem was that in color it was BORING. I was going through my past shots and hitting the “V” key (while in LIghtroom). That is a shortcut key for converting an image to Black and White. When I got to this image, I stopped. It definitely showed promise, so I spent the additional time on it to adjust it further (the default black and white conversion is pretty generic). A good reminder to never take things at first glance.

The Dosewallips River road was washed out 20 years ago, or so. This section is now closed to motor vehicles, but makes a great walk. The Dosewallips valley is on the east side of the Olympic Peninsula. It has been closed for years while they attempt to come up with a plan to reroute the road without endangering salmon in the river … and keep the cost down (since to move the road away from the river at the wash out point would be an extensive relocation up the hillside).

Black and White Brownie Shots

Tree Shadows on Building

These are images taken on 620 Tri-X at Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend on the Kodak Brownie Flash Six-20. (and I remembered to wind the film between shots this time)

The images are “soft” … but that is typical of cameras of this design … using a single lens element.

This was the first roll of film that I shot with this camera and I was taking images as I walked around Fort Worden State Park … trying to get the 8 shots taken so I could send the roll in to be developed. I no longer process my own images … finding it much more convenient to use commercial labs who process and provide you with scans. I use “The Darkroom” in California … and find they are wonderful to work with.
