I like riding ferries… and that’s a good thing, since there are so many involved in getting to and from Port Townsend (where I live). I struggled with the decision about going Black and White with these … they were, of course, heavily into shades of blue. Decided to go B&W partly from having just browsed through a few Lee Friedlander books.
Trillium are a member of the lily family and are fairly common in Western Washington at all elevations, except for alpine environs. They occasionally are included in gardens, although they can be difficult to get started. My father was able to get a small patch growing in our yard years ago. I saw my first one of the spring a couple weeks ago.
When I first looked at this image, I thought it was a twin flowered stem. But it is two separate plants with close alignment. This was taken up near the top of Mt Rose in the SE corner of the Olympic Mountains … outside the Olympic National Park.
(more found images from my archive file) Hart Lake is in the upper Duckabush Valley, and is much less visited than the Heart Lake in the upper Sol Duc. Hart Lake takes over 20 miles of hiking to get there, so there are many fewer visitors. We were camped near the lake and when the sun was coming up, the clouds in the valley moved up … before burning off for the day. It was spectacular.
Another image from near the Deer Park Campground in Olympic National Park. This shows the clouds in the valleys looking south into the center of the park. Somewhere in there is the Graywolf River valley and the valleys of Cameron Creek and Grand Creek. When you see weather like this in the Olympics, enjoy the sun while you can. Once the sun rises high enough to warm the valley air, the cloud layer rises. Then you have the tops of the cloud layer joining you and covering you. See below.
