Port Townsend Bay and Point Hudson

Port Townsend Bay and Point Hudson

The town center of Port Townsend is around the point of land coming into the water from the right. That is Point Hudson and just around the corner is one of the big marinas. In the distance is Marrowstone Island and Indian Island, while the buildings are mostly housing left from the days when Fort Worden was active. It’s now a state park and some of the housing is available for short term rental. It was also the location for filming some of “An Officer and A Gentleman”.

I liked the grass greening up as spring approached.

The top photo shows the Point Wilson Lighthouse and Admiralty Inlet into Puget Sound. The clouds are hiding Mt Baker in the Cascades. The lower photo shows the ramp that was used for moving a searchlight out to the edge of the bluff to watch for enemy ships (pre-WWI). Both were taken from Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend.

While these are taken with my Nikon FM3a on Tri-X film (and processed in a professional lab), I get scans back from the lab that I work on in Lightroom on my computer. I liked the treatment here of having large areas of solid black … and the interesting silhouettes.

Sleeping Truck

When I visited Haines, Alaska a couple times, I stayed in a small cabin close to the ferry terminal. As I was out for an after-dinner walk, I got this image of an old truck with one of the Alaska ferries in the distance. This is one of the smaller ferries that usually runs between towns, not the larger vessels that make the run from Bellingham, Washington.

The cabin had a number of grouse living in the yard. They were quite tame and I think were looking for handouts. I gave them a copy of my itinerary, but they didn’t seem interested in that type of handout.

Further down Lynn Canal from my previous post (same trip on the Alaska ferry), these images caught my eye while doing some organizing and re-processing. The sunset was pretty spectacular. These were taken about 30 minutes apart.

Winter Kayak

Winter Kayak

I was walking the beach on Marrowstone Island (just Southeast of Port Townsend, WA) the other day (late February 2023) and saw this kayaker out enjoying the sunny weather (but it was chilly). I had a nick view of Mt Rainier behind him, so took the photo. When I got back to my car, he was loading up his kayak and I was able to get contact information to get him a copy of the image. I was glad to get one to him … it brought back memories of being out in my kayak in mid-winter.
