Dock, Ferry, Sailboat, Kingfisher and Mt Rainier

This is downtown Port Townsend and the old ferry dock. In the background is the ferry heading over to the ‘new’ terminal about 1/4 mile … at the other end of downtown PT. I noticed the kingfisher sitting on the cables running between the pilings, and wished I had my telephoto lens (too heavy to carry around just in case). And Mt Rainier behind the mast of the sailboat is also a minor picture element. I like the combination of these … but it really breaks one of the rules of photography: the subject should be easy to recognize. Here, there are too many separate picture elements. But, I like it anyway.

I like riding ferries… and that’s a good thing, since there are so many involved in getting to and from Port Townsend (where I live). I struggled with the decision about going Black and White with these … they were, of course, heavily into shades of blue. Decided to go B&W partly from having just browsed through a few Lee Friedlander books.

This is the old ferry dock in downtown Port Townsend, Washington. In the early days of the town, the so-called “Mosquito Fleet” provided regular transportation around Puget Sound. Later, a scheduled ferry service was started and the current ferry provides service to Whidbey Island from a dock just a few blocks from this location.

I liked the Great Blue Heron on the top of the pilings in the upper photo … and in the far distance, Mt Rainier. The lower image shows just a hint of the Olympic Mountains … and a seagull standing on one leg.

This is a series of images stitched into a panorama. Marrowstone Island is on Puget Sound north of Seattle. If you click on the image, it will be loaded larger and you will be able to see Mt Baker in the north (left side) and Mt Rainier just barely visible off the point on the right.
