Snowy Landscapes

Snow in May in Yellowstone

Yes, I’ve been going through my archives and finding delightful images that I had forgot about and were a pleasure to revisit. The image above was in Yellowstone … and if my memory serves me correct, was taken along Yellowstone Lake. We had visited in mid-May and had a few days of nice sunny weather and then it started to snow. Below is Lake Quinault just outside the southwest corner of Olympic National Park. You can’t see a lot of snow, but it’s mid-December and the elevation here is pretty low, so a lot of the precipitation falls as rain. I mean, it is one of the classic the rain forests, after all.

Winter Lakeshore

Winter Lakeshore

This was taken out canoeing on Lake Quinault, just outside the Olympic National Park. I was so lucky to have this trip scheduled ahead of time and get a nice sunny day with no wind in the middle of winter in the rainforest. The mountains in the background are in the Colonel Bob Wilderness. The deciduous trees are alder, cottonwood and willow.

Log and Pond

The Kestner Homestead is near the Quinault National Park Ranger Station. Depending on your choice of route (there are several loops), the distance is a couple miles. It is a beautiful spot to appreciate the lush growth of this temperate rainforest.

This image was taken in the Quinault valley along the South Shore Road. This is in the Olympic Rain Forest. I was struck by what a wonderful growth pattern this old tree has … it clearly has had open area around it so that none of the limbs have been broken off. And a nice bench to sit on to enjoy it.
