Details: The Hastings Building

The Hastings Building

The Hastings Building is one of the older buildings in Port Townsend and occupies one of the corners of the main intersection. I walk around a lot downtown … it’s always interesting and there’s no mall anywhere near Port Townsend (for an indoor walking facility).

Unfortunately, the upper floors of the building are in disrepair and vacant. It needs paint and refurbishment. If I only had a couple extra million …

The Backside of Buildings

The Backside of Buildings

This is downtown Seattle near the ferry terminal. The buildings are all facing 1st Avenue … I liked the fire escapes. This was taken with a Holga (a cheap plastic film camera) and Portra 400. The single element plastic lens (like the old Kodak Brownies) does okay in the middle of the image, but gets a little blurry as you go to the edges.

Brick on Brick

Brick on Brick

There are a lot of brick buildings in Port Townsend … even though it was a center for exporting logs and lumber. The folks who could afford it built in brick … it helped to protect from fire.

The image below is of one of the doors to an old cannery that has been converted into office/living space.

Artillery Anchor Rings

Anchor Ring 1

These are anchor rings for artillery pieces that were used pre-WWI … The artillery was never fired except in practice. These are at Fort Worden State Park … and there were two other forts (Casey and Flagler) that together guarded the entrance to Puget Sound and the naval stations and boatyards in Seattle, Bremerton and Everett.

All these were used in the emplacement shown at the bottom. I thought they made an interesting study.
