This was taken from a viewpoint on the road to Hurricane Ridge in Olympic National Park. The city in the distance is Victoria on Vancouver Island. You can see the mill in Port Angeles in the foreground below the cloud bank. The logged area is outside the Park.
Yes, this was taken in summer. It’s from Grand Ridge … which runs between Deer Park and Obstruction Point (off of Hurricane Ridge) in Olympic National Park. The view looks out on the Strait of Juan de Fuca and over to Vancouver Island. If the day was a little clearer (or the lens a little sharper?) you could see the Dungeness Spit with the lighthouse on the end of it. If you look at the larger image you get by clicking on it, you can look about 1/3 the way in from the right edge.
This was taken from Hurricane Hill, a short hike from the end of the Hurricane Ridge / Hurricane Hill road in the Olympic National Park. There is a rainbow reflection in the middle of the rain shower over the Strait of Juan de Fuca. I haven’t looked down on a rainbow like this before … not sure exactly what to call it, since it isn’t really a “bow”. I wish it was more clear, but it is what it is … I played with it in Lightroom, but this was the best I could do.
A quarter mile walk up an abandoned road takes you to the summit of Blue Mountain and a panorama of spectacular views. This is the view to the east, showing Mt Baker in the distance and Admiralty inlet in the middle of the image … this is where the Strait of Juan de Fuca meets Puget Sound (also known as the Salish Sea). What looks like an island in the right middle foreground is actually the north end of the Quimper Peninsula … location of my home town Port Townsend.
Note: while researching the course of the lower Gray Wolf River, I noticed that Green Mountain is west of Deer Park and the road above Deer Park climbs Blue Mountain. My mistake … I have called it Green Mt for years. Oops.
We took a trip recently up to enjoy the view from the top of Blue Mountain on the north side of the Olympic National Park. There is a narrow (no trailers allowed) one lane gravel road to near the top above Deer Park. Spectacular views await. This shot looks down to Port Townsend and across the Strait of Juan de Fuca to Vancouver Island.
2025-07-08 Change: Originally, this was identified as being on Green Mountain. While doing some related research I noticed that this is actually Blue Mountain and that Green Mountain is to the west of Deer Park and is accessible only by trail.
