Yes, we were a little nervous…

On a dayhike up to Martins Park above Low Divide (between the Elwha and North Fork Quinault river valleys in the Olympic National Park), we saw this black bear browsing the fresh greens. We were a little nervous … the above photo was taken with a normal lens … not a telephoto. But we had seen black bears a number of times before and hadn’t found them aggressive. Regardless, we didn’t stay around to do any bear watching. Our nervousness increased quite dramatically when the bear followed us for a mile or so down to near where our campsite was at Low Divide. We took special care to bear proof our food that night.

Lovely Log Cabin

This lovely log cabin is somewhere in Utah, I think. My notes are incomplete at this point. I remember that there were stories about it being associated with the Hole-in-the-Wall gang (think Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) … but that was in Wyoming, and not close to our route. It had a wonderful meadow area too (see below). I’m also impressed with the number of windows. Makes me think it more likely to be a 20th century construction job, though.

Deep Grass Patterns

Deep Grass Patterns

No, this isn’t my lawn. It’s in the meadow by the Chinese Gardens in Fort Worden State Park (Port Townsend, WA). Some of the patterns are from the wind (it’s near the beach and the wind seems to always be blowing). Some are from deer laying down at night.

I’m attracted to patterns in nature. This is a good example of the randomness you find.

Thousand Acre Meadows

I recently upgraded to a new computer with a much larger SSD. That allowed me to put my archived photos inside my Lightroom catalog. That let me easily go through the archive and see if I had changed my mind on some of the images. Some of them went back years, so it had been a while since I had really taken a good hard look at them. As a result, I found a number that I had no idea why I had put them in the archive catalog.

This image is an example of that. The original image was very low resolution (taken many years ago) and it looks pretty ‘soft’ now. But it’s lovely, just the same. The location is in the Olympic National Park, on the ridge between the North Fork Dosewallips and the West Fork, above Thousand Acre Meadows, just below Hayden Pass. It isn’t visited frequently, since it is over 20 miles from the trailhead and you are traveling off trail.
