Snowy Landscapes

Snow in May in Yellowstone

Yes, I’ve been going through my archives and finding delightful images that I had forgot about and were a pleasure to revisit. The image above was in Yellowstone … and if my memory serves me correct, was taken along Yellowstone Lake. We had visited in mid-May and had a few days of nice sunny weather and then it started to snow. Below is Lake Quinault just outside the southwest corner of Olympic National Park. You can’t see a lot of snow, but it’s mid-December and the elevation here is pretty low, so a lot of the precipitation falls as rain. I mean, it is one of the classic the rain forests, after all.

Elephant’s Head

These were taken on a hike in the Olympic National Forest … and not recently. This is the high country near Lake Lucerne in the Upper Duckabush and along the O’Neil Pass Trail. This area is usually covered in snow until mid-July or so. I would really like to get back to this location, but it’s at least a long 2 day backpack … which means the pack starts weighing enough that I have second thoughts.

Happy Lake and its Ridge

Happy Lake

The photo above is Happy Lake … a seldom visited spot in the Olympic National Park. The Happy Lake Ridge Trail is seldom hiked, but it a wonderful loop hike, ending at Olympic Hot Springs. It’s a longer hike now … since the road is washed out 5 miles or so before the Olympic Hot Springs trailhead. Happy Lake was quite buggy … but mid-July tends to be that way. Notice the left over snow and the Avalance Lilies.
