Fort Worden Views in Winter

One of my regular exercise routines is walking the trails at Fort Worden. And I’m always carrying a camera … especially if it is sunny in winter. In these images (taken with a Nikon F6 on Portra 400 … except for the bottom image which was taken with an iPhone), the afternoon sun warmed the colors. The image below shows the Point Wilson Lighthouse and just above it, (in the haze) Mount Baker.

The trees below show what happens when you clear cut old growth and trees grow back too close together. They end up being skinny and tall from a lack of sunlight.

Fire Hydrant

Fire Hydrant

I’m not sure if this hydrant is still in use … it is in Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend … and located in an area where most of the buildings are old cement bunkers. Maybe it would be used in case of brush fires, etc. Regardless, I liked the sun highlighting the rust and the color of the hydrant echoed by the leaves.

These images were taken within a few minutes of each other, but on different days. I was enjoying the clear autumn weather and the low sun angles coming through the trees in Fort Worden State Park in Port Townsend. The sun on the red bark of the Pacific Madrona was particularly nice (numbers 1 and 2). Shot on Kodak Portra 400. While it looks like a roadway, the only cars or trucks allowed are service vehicles.

Backlit Mossy Trees

One of the things I enjoy about winter in the Olympics is seeing all the moss on the trees being backlit by sunshine. Of course, being Western Washington (let alone rain forest type environment), there aren’t a lot of days in the late fall or winter when you can get a sunny day. This was shot with my Nikon F6 on Tri-X, so I don’t have a color version for you to compare.

But I really enjoy the backlit, glowing green moss outlining each limb of these big leaf maples.

Just a Little Bit Crooked

Just A Little Bit Crooked

When I took this image into the Lightroom Development Module and was cropping, I REALLY struggled trying to square it up. But when I stepped back a moment, I realized that there just wasn’t anything I could adjust to make everything square. It reflects the old building just the way it was … crooked stairs and all. Sometimes reality just isn’t squared up. This was shot with a Nikon F6 on Kodak Tri-X … so black and white film … so the grain in the image reflects the film grain.
