This ridge runs between the Duckabush and West Fork Dosewallips river valleys in the Olympic National Park. But it was the clouds that attracted my attention.

These were taken on a hike in the Olympic National Forest … and not recently. This is the high country near Lake Lucerne in the Upper Duckabush and along the O’Neil Pass Trail. This area is usually covered in snow until mid-July or so. I would really like to get back to this location, but it’s at least a long 2 day backpack … which means the pack starts weighing enough that I have second thoughts.

These are a couple of old favorites that I haven’t posted before. Both have a very soft feel to them. They’re a little different from the usual sunset photos I post. O’Neil Pass (top photo) is in the Olympic National Park between the Duckabush and East Fork Quinault river valleys.

(more found images from my archive) The top image shows why Hart Lake (Upper Duckabush in the Olympic National Park) is sometimes called Heart Lake (but since there is another Heart Lake — also heart shaped — also in the ONP). So I continue to call this one Hart Lake. If you look carefully in the lower right corner of the top image (click on it for a bigger view), you will see the little green dot that is our tent.

These photos are from the Upper Duckabush area of the Olympic National Park. I really liked the Elephants Head … this was the only time I had seen it. Getting low to capture it allowed me to also get the ridgeline in the image, which really gives it a lot of context that would be missing otherwise.
The image below is a more typical mossy streamlet running through the alpine area. I enjoy the rich greens of the various varieties of mosses … a visual feast.
