Beehive Kilns, Death Valley NP

Beehive Kilns, Death Valley NP

These beehive kilns were used in to make charcoal for the smelters in what is now Death Valley National Park. The wood came from the surrounding hills (this is about 6500 feet). The growth rate of the trees is extremely slow… and fortunately, the mining venture went broke prior to the total deforestation of the area. Many of the trees you see in the photo are junipers… while the pines were cut for charcoal.
